JOB OBJECTIVE:
Provides friendly, high-quality customer service to Library patrons under the direction of the Lead Library Associate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma
- Cooperative attitude and dependability; ability to organize work and exercise good judgment.
- Personality, attitude, and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and staff members in a professional manner.
- Must be aware of and adhere to library policies.
- Knowledge of various computer applications
- Understand the necessity for, and maintain confidentiality of, library users.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 15 lbs. Average mobility needed. Ability to stand, walk, reach, hold, carry, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, push and maneuver book carts.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Charges books, magazines, and other library holdings in and out at the circulation desk
- Collects any fees using an automated circulation system and notes the fees paid on the daily cash log
- Reserves and renews books and other materials
- Issue library cards to patrons and determine the appropriate card type to issue. (residential, reciprocal, paid, PLAC)
- Checks materials for damage and reports damage to the Circulation manager or patron services
- Replaces books, magazines and other library holdings on shelves according to numbering and alphabetical sequences
- Empties book and media drops at regular intervals
- Assists patrons in locating materials
- Assists patrons with pay copier if needed
- Operates facsimile machine
- Answers in-house calls and provides routine information or transfers calls
- Assists in assuring accurate library shelving by shelf-reading and
re-shelving of materials, as needed - Shifts collections to make room for new materials
- Sorts mail and places items in appropriate mailboxes
- Follows opening and closing procedures
- Performs related work as required
- Attends staff meetings
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of library clerical procedures and practices
- Good knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System
- Good ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions
- Good ability to pay attention to detail
- Good ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates and the general public
OTHER:
- Cooperating as a team member with the library staff in performing any duties essential to the achievement of the objectives of the library.
- Doing related work as required.
