Indiana Candidate Eligibility

In Indiana, the high school equivalency test may be administered only to individuals who meet the following minimum guidelines:

  • Does not hold a diploma from an accredited high school or its equivalent; and
  • Is a resident of the state of Indiana for a minimum of thirty (30) days immediately preceding the day of testing; and
  • Either has officially exited high school or is at least eighteen (18) years of age.

Students who are younger

Students who are younger than 18 must also obtain a superintendent’s recommendation to participate in high school equivalency testing. Absolutely no one under the age of 16 may take the Indiana high school equivalency test. An Exit Interview signed by a principal and an Indiana Superintendent’s Recommendation are required when a student younger than 18 pre-registers for testing.

Additionally, ALL students must provide a verifiying proof of identity. Valid driver’s licenses, valid passports, military ID’s or other forms of government-issued (national or foreign) identification must show name, address, date of birth, signature and photograph. If the photo identification does not establish Indiana residency, then a second form may be used, including a utility bill, pay stub, rental agreement or other similar form.

The High School Equivalency Test

  • The test battery is made up of five (5) sections; Math, Reading, Writing (including an essay), Science and Social Studies.
  • The test takes approximately 8 hours to complete and is often scheduled in two consecutive days.
  • Students have 60 calendar days to complete the full test battery. If the battery remains incomplete on the sixty-first (61) day, test scores for completed subtests will be invalidated.
  • To earn a passing score on the high school equivalency, a student must receive a scale score of 500 in each of the five (5) subtests. The student does not need to achieve an overall average score in order to earn a credential.
  • Effective January 1, 2019, the cost of testing is $95 for the initial test battery; $19 per subject for a retest or if a student misses a test for which they were scheduled and confirmed.
  • Applicants may not retest in any subject until the full test battery has been completed. Since there are three (3) forms of the test, candidates will be eligible to immediately retest twice in a calendar year.
